Why do I tutor?

I want to be a teacher someday, and tutoring lets me practice explaining things in a real way. I like giving back and helping others, and teaching concepts to someone else actually helps me understand them better too.

Tutoring Experience

Last semester I worked with a student named Theo who was very shy and struggling with some foundational AP Calc AB concepts, which is completely understandable given how challenging the class is. We worked through three problems using the same core idea. For the first, we went step by step together so he could see the full thought process. On the second, he tried it independently and made a small mistake that led him away from the correct answer, but once I pointed it out, he was able to recover and finish confidently. By the third problem, he solved it entirely on his own and got the correct answer. That moment really captures my tutoring style: patience, repetition, and gently pushing students to keep trying until the concept truly clicks.

Tutoring Style

I’d say patience, engagement, and flexibility. I’m good at meeting students where they are, keeping them interested, and adjusting how I explain things. I’ve worked with many different kinds of students, and my varied academic and personal background helps me explain concepts clearly across subjects.

Positive Learning Environment

A positive learning environment feels supportive, low-pressure, and encouraging. Mistakes are treated as part of the process, questions are welcomed, and students feel comfortable thinking out loud, trying again, and building confidence as they learn.

Importance of Being a Mentor

Being a mentor is important to me because I’m naturally drawn to roles where I support others. I’m an older sibling and an RA, so mentoring has been part of my life in multiple ways. I love being someone people feel they can depend on, whether for guidance, reassurance, or just a safe space. I wouldn’t be where I am without the mentors who supported me, and giving back by being that person for someone else feels deeply meaningful.
