Why do I tutor?

I started tutoring because I realized that my past experiences as a student-athlete could be used to help others facing similar challenges. I hope to become a support system that truly understands what my student is facing and needs, whether that pertains to academics or general life mentorship.

Tutoring Experience

In the past, I had the opportunity to support a student as she prepared for the AP Environmental Science test, all while juggling the demands of volleyball and college applications. Throughout our sessions, we would always take a few minutes to debrief to give her a chance to voice her thoughts amid the pressures of academics, volleyball, and applications. There, she voiced her concerns, sought advice, and even shared all her small victories. I found that these small breaks were vital in establishing a deeper sense of trust and instilling greater confidence in her ability to overcome the obstacles she encountered. This experience highlights the methodology and approach I adopt to each student I encounter.

Tutoring Style

I would say that one of my strongest attributes is my versatility. I thoroughly enjoy helping my students beyond their academic studies, whether that means navigating everyday issues; preparing for speeches and interviews; and even writing college/research essays.

Positive Learning Environment

My goal as an Academic Coach is to facilitate open and honest communication with my students. I believe that allowing my students to openly express their thoughts, concerns, and opinions is the foundation for a positive learning environment which is essential to genuine growth.

Importance of Being a Mentor

The word “mentor” often implies a hierarchical relationship, a position of authority. Contrastingly, my genuine goal with each of my students is to become a reliable partner, understanding when to take the initiative to guide and when to meet them as a peer so I can offer a new objective perspective. To me, the significance of being their “mentor” lies in establishing deep connections with my students and providing a collaborative environment for their growth. Seeing the impacts of my mentorship in different facets of their life is what makes every session worthwhile.
