I tutor because I have experienced firsthand the struggles of poor teaching and feeling lost in classes. I hope to be able to break concepts down for students at their unique pace, focusing on how they learn new information and individualizing the teachings.
With a previous student of mine, they would bring problem sets to me, yet they completely knew how to do them. They could explain their concepts and thought process, almost finding it too easy. Yet, they didn't score very well on tests. I found that this was because they were too confident, never checking their answers. So, I began drilling this habit, practicing on every lesson and reminding them frequently. When they did happen to make a mistake, this process could catch it, showing them the importance of checking your work even when concepts were easy.
I think my specific coaching talents lie in finding ways to connect with students and therefore customizing the learning to their specific thought processes. Further, I think I have patience, especially with adolescents, trying to establish good habits for their academic future.
A positive learning environment looks like supporting educationally and emotionally during difficult concepts. It includes acknowledging that making mistakes is normal, but using them as teaching opportunities.
Being a mentor makes a difference in someone's life. As a mentor, you are not only a role model, but a teacher and peer simultaneously. This is important to me as someone without younger siblings, I hope to be able to benefit in the upbringings of those in need.
